How Healthy Is Tapped Water

As most of us might know, tapped water is any water gotten straight from a faucet or tap. It represents any water that hasn’t been distilled, purified, or treated accordingly.

Below are the sources of tap water;

  • Surface Water: This can be found in places like rivers, lakes, and reservoirs.
  • Groundwater: This is gotten from deep wells and artesian. However, before we drink this water, it has to undergo a vital disinfection process, which would, in turn, destroy most of the harmful organisms like bacteria and parasites.

However, the source of your tapped water depends solely on your location/environment. Desalination is also a process to ensure the water is clean, and it is the act of converting seawater to drinking water.

Different Processes In Treating Tapped Water

Below are four significant steps in treating tapped water; Coagulation and Flocculation, Sedimentation, Filtration, and Disinfection.

Coagulation and Flocculation: This process allows chemicals added to the water to bring small particles together. This form of treatment helps create a bigger particle that is easy to filter out. Some reagents added to this process are; polymers, talcum, aluminum salts, iron, activated carbons, and activated silica. When bound together as one, they are called “floc.”

Sedimentation: Once the flocs settle at the bottom of the tank, this process begins.

Filtration: This kicks off the moment all the floc must have settled; it starts by filtering out the water to get rid of particles of dust, parasites, bacteria, microorganisms, and chemicals.

Disinfection: Finally, the last process starts by disinfecting the water to ensure all remaining microbial contaminants are destroyed. To achieve this, add these chemicals to the water; chlorine dioxides and chlorine chlorinate.

Benefits Of Tapped Water

The most significant advantages of tap water are:

  • Tapped water is low-cost and convenient.
  • Reusable bottles are easy to fill up with tap water before leaving the environment.
  • At bars, restaurants, and public drinking fountains, tap water is readily available and accessible.
  • Because it travels through rock formations, healthy minerals like; calcium and magnesium are found in tapped waters. Generally, to get stronger, healthier bones and teeth, tap water is recommended.
  • Although tap and bottled water both have pros and cons, tap water is mostly a better option than its alternatives because of its cost-free advantage, environmental friendliness, and lesser contaminants.
  • However, some people cannot narrow out the difference between the listed two.
  • Again, the tap offers unlimited fresh water for different purposes like; drinking, cooking, coffee, tea, or watering sensitive plants. If you insist on using a filter, ensure you frequently replace it.

Is It Safe To Drink Tapped Water?

Although tap water is safe for consumption, some common contaminants remain in the water even after treatments, including copper, uranium, aluminum, lead, arsenic, iron, pesticides, herbicides, etc.

Every single one of these contaminants has massive side effects. For example, taking too much copper damages the liver and causes kidney failure. While lead comes through the pipes that the water passes through, this has life-altering effects on growing children like; stunted growth, anemia, low IQ, etc. It also affects pregnant women, and these effects cause premature birth and reduced development of the fetus. That’s not all, as adults are not spared either, it causes; reproductive problems decreased kidney function, and cardiovascular effects.

Most countries are filled with lead-infested water, where the city officials have wholly neglected the health crisis. Furthermore, It is not just foreign contaminants that stand as an issue to tapped water, and it is also a byproduct of the treatment process.

Conclusion

Do not make any mistake by thinking that bottled water is purer/cleaner than tapped water. Bottled water is mainly best for occasions and resorts. As long as your tap water is clean and disinfected, go for it!

At Vi Lusso, we believe in healthy living for us and for our environment. This is the reason why our water bottles are elegantly designed with the best eco-friendly materials.
