Borosilicate Bottles: Is It a Toxic Bottle?

A sustainable alternative to reducing the throwaway plastic of bottled beverages is the borosilicate glass bottle. The reusable borosilicate bottles are safe for health. Because they contain neither BPA (bisphenol A) nor BPS (bisphenol S) and neither PVC nor lead nor cadmium.

Replacing a habit that you discard with one that you reuse always has a lower impact on the environment. In addition, with this eco-friendly material, comfort is not sacrificed: it is a lightweight bottle that can be washed in the dishwasher and heated in the microwave.

But what is borosilicate? Well, it is a type of glass ( not a Toxic Bottle). This material is better known as Duran or Pyrex, which are trademarks. It is also known as borosilicate glass.

What's So Special About Borosilicate?

This glass is enhanced with additives that lighten it. Specifically: boron and silicon, hence the name. Because it is more resistant and less heavy, it is an ideal material to make reusable water bottles .

Advantages of Borosilicate Bottles

These are the most important advantages of these eco-bottles:

  • Compared to a glass one, the wall is thinner (they are lighter bottles)
  • They are safe for health: they are free of chemicals and toxins such as phthalates, BPA or BPS
  • They are easy to wash - borosilicate bottles wash just as well as glass or stainless steel
  • They do not transmit flavors or odors to the drink
  • They are resistant to thermal shock
  • They can be washed in the dishwasher (except those with a bamboo lid)
  • Ecological and sustainable material
  • Its glass is of high transparency
  • They have no catalytic effect
  • They do not present porosity on their surface
  • They are resistant to attacks with chemicals: neither acids nor alkaline bases damage the material

In short: the main quality of borosilicate is its resistance to high temperatures. That is, it is less susceptible to thermal shock.

To illustrate: what happens if we put a conventional glass bottle filled with freezing water under a stream of hot water? Is there a risk that the glass will crack? The borosilicate bottle is stronger in this regard.

By the way, the properties of borosilicate glass are used by many other kitchen utensils. For example, sturdy food baking dishes graduated measuring jugs, etc., are made from this material.

As is the case with bottles, the good mechanical resistance of this glass makes it possible to lighten the thickness of the wall and thereby reduce the weight of objects.

What Are Its Drawbacks?

No material is perfect. Neither is borosilicate glass. Its cons have to do with price and usability.

First, compared to bottles made of tritan — or other toxic-free, health-safe plastic polymers — this bottle has the disadvantage of being slightly heavier.

Second, a point against borosilicate's is their (lower) resistance to breakage concerning stainless steel bottles. Indeed, steel is a much stronger material in this regard.

As you can see, the borosilicate bottle is not a toxic bottle, and it competes strongly against other top bottle materials like metal, plastic, etc. We support saving our ecosystem, and that is why we deal with eco-friendly borosilicate non-toxic water bottle for various activities.
