The Sun emits powerful radiation that damages the retina in a short time.

When there is an eclipse, it is very tempting to look at the Sun or through its reflection on water because it is exciting, and for a long time, our eyes endure without visual symptoms or discomfort.

However, the effect of radiation (mainly ultraviolet) is devastating on our retina, causing irreparable damage that can even cause low vision or even legal blindness.

The Most Straightforward Ways To See An Eclipse Safely

 

1. Solar Eclipse Glasses

It is the most common method, but it is not the safest. These glasses are specially designed to see eclipses, and you can buy them in some kiosks, opticians, or even purchase eclipse glasses on Amazon.

Despite wearing special eclipse glasses, we recommend that you should not spend more than 30 seconds in a row looking towards the Sun even if they tell you in the instructions that you can stay longer.

2. Welding Filters

It is a cheap and convenient method that when the date of the eclipses approaches, it usually runs out quickly, and although you can get welder filters online, it is more challenging to select the filter well. As with the special eclipse glasses, you should not spend more than 30 seconds looking directly at the eclipse.

Also, the only suitable filter is number 14. If you have a soldering iron filter and are unsure what part number it has, DO NOT USE IT.

3. View An Eclipse Using Projection Systems

If done and used correctly, they are very safe indirect observation methods. You will need a flat mirror covered entirely with paper from which a hole less than 1 cm in diameter has been cut out.

It would be best if you never looked at the image of the Sun in the mirror; you only have to look at the projected image.

4. Use Of Optical Instruments (Telescopes And Binoculars)

This method is better left to the astronomy associations and people trained in the subject. When considering magnifying lenses, the same filters are not worth putting in the eyepieces, and specific knowledge is needed.

If you want to use binoculars or a telescope, you must buy special filters.

Things You Must Never Do to See a Solar Eclipse

• Do not use aluminum foil
• Do not use water as a projection mirror
